Gassing Out on Squats? How to Build Work Capacity That Actually Helps Your Total

Momentum Coach ·

You unrack the bar for a heavy set of five. By rep three, your legs are fine, but your lungs are burning. You rack it after four because you can't brace anymore.

Your absolute strength isn't the problem. Your work capacity is garbage.

If you want to handle more volume, recover between sets faster, and actually survive a heavy training block without taking 10-minute rests, you need to fix your endurance.

Why Powerlifters Need Cardio

Stop believing the myth that cardio kills your gains. Being out of shape kills your gains.

  • You recover faster between sets. A strong heart pumps blood and clears waste efficiently. You'll be ready for your next set in 3 minutes instead of 8.
  • You handle more volume. If you don't gas out, you can do more work. More work equals more muscle and more strength.
  • You don't die on meet day. Meets are long. If sitting around all day drains you, you'll miss your deadlifts.

How to Build the Engine

Training strategies

1. Stop Doing Stupid HIIT

You already lift heavy. You don't need to do 100 burpees for time and fry your CNS even more. High-intensity interval training is just going to compete with your squat recovery.

2. Low-Intensity Steady State (LISS)

This is the boring stuff that actually works. Get on a bike, a rower, or just walk on an incline. Keep your heart rate around 120-130 BPM. Do it for 20-30 minutes, two or three times a week. You should be able to hold a conversation. If you are gasping, you are going too hard.

3. Sled Pushes and Carries

If you want something more specific, push a heavy sled or carry kettlebells. It builds incredible core strength, work capacity, and doesn't cause eccentric muscle damage (meaning you won't be sore the next day).

Do the Work

It's not sexy. Nobody posts their 20-minute stationary bike session on Instagram. But when you can hit your volume blocks without dying under the bar, you'll see why it matters.

Stop making excuses. Build the engine. Let the app handle the barbell math.
