Top-Down vs Bottom-Up: The plan vs the reality of training
Momentum Coach ·
In powerlifting programming, you usually see two types of lifters.
The first type has a 12-week spreadsheet printed out. They know exactly what they are lifting three months from now. That's Top-Down.
The second type walks in and decides what to do based on how their warm-ups feel. That's Bottom-Up.
If you want to actually get strong without snapping in half, you need a mix of both.
Top-Down: The map
You start with a target date (a meet or a test day) and work backwards. You set your blocks: accumulation, intensification, and peak.
- The good: You have a clear heading. You don't skip workouts because you have a "goal."
- The bad: It assumes you are a robot. It doesn't care if you have a flu in week 4 or if your boss makes you work overtime in week 8.
Bottom-Up: The reality check
You build the program based on how you are actually responding to the weights right now.
- The good: Maximum individualization. If the bar is flying, you add weight. If you're fried, you back off. You never overtrain.
- The bad: It's easy to lose the big picture. Without a "Top-Down" structure, you might just spin your wheels doing random RPE 8 sets forever.
How Momentum Coach stops the madness
We don't make you choose. We use a hybrid system.
- Top-Down Structure: We set the long-term goal. We know where you need to be in 12 weeks to hit a PR.
- Bottom-Up Execution: Our AI ("Coachy") watches every set. If you log a high RPE on a weight that should be easy, the app instantly pivots. It changes the rest of your session and maybe even the next week to make sure you recover.
You get the direction of a master plan with the flexibility of a world-class coach standing next to you.
